AI Dungeon Alternatives: Compare Turns, Memory, and Story Portability Before You Move

If you want a text adventure with open-ended player input, start with AI Dungeon's free Wanderer tier or NovelAI's 50-action text trial. If you want a rules-heavy game master, Friends & Fables is the closer fit. If you want cinematic video and fixed choices, Gameer is not a like-for-like replacement at all. The useful question is not “which alternative is best?” It is “which part of AI Dungeon are you replacing?”

Quick comparison before you switch

AI Dungeon — best for open-ended text play. The official membership page lists Wanderer at $0 with 25 Memory Bank memories, Journey at $14.99/month with 100 memories, Legend at $29.99 with 200, Mythic at $49.99 with 400, and Ultimate at $99.99 with 800. The same page lists free context up to 4K tokens, rising to 8K, 16K, and 32K on paid tiers. Source: https://help.aidungeon.com/memberships-benefits

NovelAI — best for portable story files. Its official FAQ lists Tablet at $10/month, Scroll at $15, and Opus at $25. The text trial gives 50 actions after registration. NovelAI exports .story and .scenario files with settings, Memory, Author's Note, Lorebook entries, and AI Modules; it also supports raw text and a full-story ZIP download. Friends & Fables — best for a party and tabletop rules. Its current pricing page lists Free at $0 with up to 25 turns per day, long-term memories, unlimited campaign slots, and up to 3-player campaigns. Starter is $19.95/month, Pro $29.95, and Legend $39.95; those tiers add unlimited standard turns, larger parties, and monthly bonus credits. Source: https://fables.gg/pricing

Gameer — best for cinematic, choice-based sessions. Gameer's own comparison says it uses AI-generated video, structured arcs, and tap-to-choose mechanics instead of AI Dungeon's typed, open-ended text. It says games can be played in a browser without a download or signup wall. Source: https://www.gameer.io/ai-dungeon-alternative

What the free limit actually means

The numbers are not interchangeable. AI Dungeon's free plan is described in memories and context, while Friends & Fables counts the AI Game Master's turns. NovelAI's free entry is a one-time 50-action trial, not a daily allowance. A player who writes one action per scene will experience those policies differently from a player who retries, expands context, or asks for several alternatives.

Before paying, run the same ten-minute test in the mode you actually use:

That test is more useful than calling every product's free tier “unlimited.”

The migration test most comparison pages skip

Do not switch tools with an unfinished campaign still trapped inside the old app. Make a portable checkpoint first:

1. Export the complete story if the service supports a structured file. NovelAI's .story export keeps settings, Memory, Author's Note, Lorebook entries, and AI Modules; AI Dungeon's settings include a Download Adventure backup as a .zip file. Sources: https://docs.novelai.net/en/faq/ and https://help.aidungeon.com/understanding-settings
2. Also save a plain-text copy. Keep the title, character names, current location, unresolved goals, inventory, and the next intended action in the first screen of that file.
3. Open the replacement tool with a short import test, not the whole campaign. Confirm that it can read the file or checkpoint before spending time rebuilding a world.
4. Keep the original export untouched. A tool that cannot import the old format may still be usable, but it is not a zero-loss move.

This is the practical difference between “the story is in the cloud” and “I can change tools without losing the story.” Gameer's public comparison describes its structured, choice-based format, but does not document an AI Dungeon story-import path. That is a migration limitation, not a reason to call the product bad.

Choose by failure mode

Choose AI Dungeon when you want to type unusual actions and let the system improvise around them. Its official help also exposes Memory System, Plot Essentials, Story Cards, and downloadable Adventure backups, so the workflow is built around an ongoing text campaign.

Choose NovelAI when export and privacy controls matter more than a free daily allowance. Its documentation says stories can be exported with their supporting settings and can be downloaded in bulk; it also warns that losing the account password can permanently remove access to remotely stored stories.

Choose Friends & Fables when you want an AI Game Master to adjudicate a more explicit tabletop loop. The product documents tactical D&D 5e combat, maps, quests, inventory, and multiplayer campaigns of up to six players on the Legend tier. That is a different promise from an unconstrained text sandbox.

Choose Gameer when the point is to watch a short interactive film and make authored choices. Its own page says sessions typically run 15 to 30 minutes and emphasizes beginnings, turning points, and endings. Do not choose it expecting typed, arbitrary commands to carry a long campaign.

When not to switch

Do not switch if the feature you value is the one the replacement does not even attempt: open-ended text actions, a portable export, a large party, or cinematic choice scenes. Keep AI Dungeon for that use, export a checkpoint, and only move the next experiment when the replacement passes the exact test you care about.
